These Super Simple Homemade Cheesy Buns are exactly what you didn’t know you needed to elevate your family bbq’s!
These are as simple to make as my Super Simple Homemade White Bread. The ingredients and first rise are the exact same. It’s the second half the differs slightly but remains so easy and SO worth it!
These are not only my go to (and always requested) for bbq’s year round, but also my go to as a delivery to friends and family as comfort food. I like to package these in a XL Ziploc bag with a joke on the front and answer on the back to just brighten someone’s day. I mean would you refuse a bag full of cheesy buns with a classic dad joke written on them? I know I certainly wouldn’t! Somehow these Super Simple Homemade Cheesy Buns just make life better for everyone! They’re the hug you didn’t know you needed.
Like I say with my Super Simple Homemade White Bread, homemade bread and buns are not complicated and do not require tons of time! Yes a little elbow grease but it sounds way more complicated than it is and once you make them once you’ll be hooked and won’t go back to any of that store bought stuff! Opting for the quick rise yeast can have these on the counter in 2 hours with lots of rest time in between!
I always like using a 4QT glass dish so I can see everything clearly and can quickly see my dough rising without having to lift the towel to check on it. Start this recipe by melting 3 TBS butter (salted or unsalted however I usually opt for the salted) in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds. Then stir in 1.5 TBS white sugar. Once sugar is dissolved add in 3 cups of warm water (not hot) and mix all together. Add 1.5 TBS quick rising yeast and give a quick stir then let it bloom!
This will take about 10-15 minutes depending on your room temperature. Yeast likes to thrive in warm environments so if your house is on the chilly side, you can pop it in the oven with just the light on (please do not heat your oven!). If you have traditional yeast this may take a little longer to become light and fluffy on the top.
Once it’s nice and fluffy like on the top you will want to add in your 7 cups of flour and 1 TBS of salt and combine together to create a shaggy dough. I always use all purpose flour because we go through so much flour it is the most cost effective and is easy to find in larger bags.
If you notice your dough really sticking to your spoon once it’s all mixed in you can add a little extra flour before getting your hands in there to mix so it isn’t so sticky on your hands. Then start kneading with your hands until the dough forms a nice ball that springs back when you give it a little jab. I typically lift the dough from the bottom of the bowl and fold it in towards the center and then push down with the bottom of my palm where it meets your wrist. And repeat until you’re happy with your dough ball and all little bits are combined and it’s looking fairly smooth. You may need to add a little more flour if it’s too sticky or a little warm water if it’s too dry.
Lift your dough ball out of the bowl and lightly oil all around with olive oil and place the dough ball back in and cover with a dishtowel and let it rise! With quick rise yeast this will be around 30 minutes or until doubled in size (again depends on the room’s temperature). If using traditional yeast it will be about double the rise time. While the dough is rising you can grab two baking sheets and line with parchment paper.
Once your first rise is complete, going around the bowl, pull the sides of the dough away from the bowl to get out most of the air bubbles. Pinch off small dough balls from the original dough ball in the bowl and roll in the palm of your hands and then slightly flatten out in your hands . Place on your parchment lined baking sheets. Repeat until there is no dough left. Will roughly make 16-19 buns.
Cover again with your dishtowel and rise again for around 30 mins.
After the second rise preheat your oven to 375F and brush the tops of buns with melted butter.
Sprinkle buttered tops with your favourite Italian seasoning. This believe it or not will make a huge difference! I tend to opt for a freeze dried Italiano as I find it has more flavour.
And last step! The cheese!! I always use a marble cheese and a larger grate. Don’t be shy!
Now bake for 20 minutes and enjoy the delicious smell of these Super Simple Homemade Cheesy buns take over your home! If you are cooking the 2 pans at once you may have to move the bottom tray to the top to get the cheese a nice golden brown.
Once your 20 minutes is up remove pans from the oven and let the buns sit for 5 minutes before moving over to a cooling rack.
Now let the endless options of deliciousness begin!
Egg sandwiches, brisket, burgers, toasted with butter……. you see where I’m going with this.

- 3 TBS Italiano Spice Blend
Instructions
1. Melt the butter in large microwave safe bowl
